Working at heights can be extremely hazardous, with falls being one of the most common causes of workplace injuries and fatalities. The risks involved include falls from ladders, scaffolding, rooftops, and other elevated surfaces, which can result in serious injuries or even death.

The most common kinds of fatal accidents to workers were; falls from height, struck by a moving vehicle or struck by a moving object. Between them accounting for around 70% of fatal injuries to workers in 2023/24.

What are the Regulations
For Working from Height
Working at heights is a serious safety concern in the UK, and there are several regulations and guidelines that employers must follow to ensure the safety of their employees who work at heights. Here are some key regulations and guidelines:
- The Work at Height Regulations 2005: This regulation requires employers to prevent falls from height, ensure the stability of structures, and provide personal protective equipment (PPE) for employees who work at heights.
- Health and Safety Executive (HSE): The HSE is the national regulator for workplace health and safety in the UK. The HSE provides guidance on working at heights, including the provision of guidance on the safe use of scaffolding, harnesses, and other equipment.
- British Standards: The British Standards Institution (BSI) publishes a range of standards related to working at heights, including BS 8596:2017 “Personal fall protection equipment for work at height” and BS 8517-1:2019 “Scaffolding – Code of practice for design, manufacture and installation”.
- CIOB Code of Practice: The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) publishes a code of practice for working at heights, which provides guidance on the design, construction, and use of scaffolding and other equipment.
- Ladder Association Guidelines: The Ladder Association provides guidelines on the safe use of ladders and step ladders in the UK.
- Roof work Guidelines: The Roof work Association provides guidelines on safe working practices for roofers and others who work at height on roofs.
