Correct Helmet Fitting for Long Hair
Proper head protection is essential for everyone on site, and getting the fit right is key, this extends to those with long hair.
A correctly adjusted helmet ensures the suspension harness absorbs impact energy as designed, keeping the wearer safe in the event of a fall or impact. If affected, the helmet may not protect.
Modern helmets are designed with flexibility in mind, allowing long hair to be worn safely without compromising protection.
Many PPE brands, including JSP, incorporate adjustable harnesses that accommodate low ponytails, braids, or thick hair. The ponytail can be positioned between the helmet shell and the harness, allowing the nape strap at the back of the helmet to be tightened securely.
For helmets with a 4-point chinstrap, place the ponytail between the rear webbing and adjust the strap for a firm, comfortable fit. Features such as 3D-Adjustment™ systems allow the harness height to be modified inside the helmet, providing additional space for hair while maintaining protection.
Adjusting the size is simple thanks to slip-and-wheel ratchets that allow one-handed operation. Advanced harness designs, like the Revolution® Flex, offer deep nape straps and flexible pads to cradle the head, ensuring a secure fit even at lower adjustment levels.
If you’re wearing helmet-mounted hearing protection, make sure hair does not sit beneath the ear defender cushion. A proper seal around the ear is essential for effective noise reduction, and a hair break in the seal can reduce protection.
With the right adjustments, long hair doesn’t have to interfere with comfort or safety. Investing a few minutes in proper helmet fitting protects both the wearer and the team, keeping everyone safe on site.
